What Is Prayer?
by Jennifer Witteborg
- Is it bending your head, closing your eyes, and saying the same few words over and over again?
- Is it totally necessary to ALWAYS kneel while praying?
- Do you have to be in a special place such as a church in order for God to hear your prayer?
The answer is NO to all the above.
The Bible tells us:
Do not repeat over and over the same thing. (Matthew 6:7)
To pray without ceasing (stopping). (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
Jesus told the Samaritan woman that we will worship the Father in spirit and truth. (John 4:21-24)
Prayer is talking and listening to God. When you talk or listen to a loved one, you don't necessarily always say the same thing, or always sit/stand/kneel in the same place. You talk/listen to a person because you want to know how that person is doing.
God knows what we will ask in our prayers before we say it (Matthew 6:8). So should we not talk at all since He already knows? No! God loves us very much and wants us to spend time with Him as much as possible. Remember pray without ceasing (stopping).
What about those times when we can't 'find' the words to express how we feel? Again, God knows what we are saying, and even sends the Holy Spirit to help our prayer (Romans 8:26, 27).
So then, prayer life should be a constant conversation with God. Just like we don't want to be with friends who talk all the time and never asks how we are doing, we need to listen to God. That means having some quiet time "Be still and KNOW I am GOD" (Psalms 46:10).
It is well with our souls when we start the day with God (Psalms 5:3). Some people take verses and apply them in their lives. Many people know the "Our Father in Heaven" prayer that Jesus gave us as an example of how to pray. Some people use that and in between the lines, they add their own comments. Some people put their names or the names of those they are praying for into the verse: EXAMPLE...
At church a friend gave a good example of how prayer works in our lives. He read it somewhere and quoted it. "The shortest distance between a problem and a solution is the distance between your knees and the floor."
Praying with Bible study is the way to become closer to God and to be HIS child. It's the way that we become to KNOW our Savior, Jesus Christ, and helps us remember our Creator. Join with me in a daily walk/talk with God.
