The Marriage of the Lamb and His Bride
by David Trexler
Last weekend my wife and I went to a wedding at our church. Our friend's daughter was getting married to a handsome young man who just completed his college degree. We were all waiting for the wedding to start. We had no idea what the bride would look like or what she would wear. Then we saw the groom appear with a white suit and wait nervously for his bride. Then the bridesmaids, maid of honor, groom's attendants, the Bible boy and the flower girl walked to the front to stand with the groom. All of us were ready to see the bride, but she did not come! We waited and waited. What happened? The bride was ready to go, but a singer who was supposed to sing did not show up. Would the groom have to wait until the singer arrived? Finally the bride walked to the front without the singer.
Wow! What a beautiful bride she was! She was wearing a beautiful white wedding dress with a very long train. I could imagine how the groom felt when he saw her. His heart must have pounded hard and fast!
The wedding was the most important event for the groom and the bride. They decided to join forever with the blessing of God. That means the bride decided to give her life to the man she loved. The same was true for the groom.
The wedding reminds me of the great wedding of the Lamb and the bride, the children of God. The Lamb is Jesus Christ, who died as the sacrificial lamb for all of us. The bride is the followers of Jesus Christ. "Let us rejoice and be glad and give Him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and His bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear. (Fine linen is a symbol of the righteous acts of the saints)" (Revelation 19:7, 8, NIV).
How do we receive the fine linen (wedding clothes)? We receive the fine linen when we accept Jesus Christ as our Saviour. He forgives our sins and makes us new persons. Our sins are the same as a filthy rag, but Jesus makes us clean. How do we keep the wedding clothes? We keep the wedding clothes as long as we stay with Jesus and follow Him as our Lord. Jesus says, "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments" (John 14:15, RSV). If we make a mistake and ruin our gift of wedding clothes, what shall we do? Jesus says, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9, RSV).
Jesus wants you to come to His wedding supper. Only persons who have the wedding clothes can come to the supper. My friend, the marriage of the Lamb (Jesus) and His bride (God's people) is one of the most important events in the Bible. Will you accept the invitation and wear His righteous robe (wedding clothes)? You will never be sorry if you accept Jesus as your Saviour and Lord.
